BLACK BELT 1st Degree

Tommy Wales has been training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu For 14 years and Muay Thai for 10 years. He holds the rank of Blackbelt 1st Degree (Under Renato Tavares/ATT) in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and a kru in Muay Thai. During this time he has trained with many great athletes including: Renato Tavares, Renzo Gracie, Jacare, Carlson Gracie Sr., Carlson Gracie Jr., Mike O’Donnell, Alex Bada, Sakesem Kanthra Wong, Mikahl Caldwell and many others. He is also a veteran MMA fighter (RFL, Shooto And Kick Shoot) he teaches Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, submission wrestling, and Muay Thai classes. Tommy is still working closely with Master Renato Tavares to further improve his training methods.

Assistant Instructor Joe Hoffer


Joe Hoffer started training in Shuri Ryu karate in 1979 under Robert Bowles in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He started training in Tae Kwon Do and kickboxing in a college club in Cleveland, Ohio. After graduating from college, he started training in Hakko Ryu Jiu-jitsu in 1985 with Sensei Michael LaMonica. In 1996, he was the first American Shihan (Master’s rank) in Hakko Denshin Ryu, a martial art that arose from the disintegration of the original Japanese Federation. In December of 2007, Mr. Hoffer was awarded the rank of San Dai Kichu, the highest rank in Hakko Denshin Ryu.

In 2002, Mr. Hoffer received his blue belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu from Haraldo Bunn. In 2004, he was promoted to purple belt by Allan Goes. Currently, Mr. Hoffer is a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu under Master Renato Tavares. Mr. Hoffer helps teach Brazilian jiu-jitsu and he also teaches Hakko Denshin Ryu jiu-jitsu and self defense classes at Cleveland Mixed Martial Arts Academy. Mr. Hoffer assisted Michael LaMonica at the Medina Police Academy in defensive tactics for over ten years. Mr. Hoffer has been teaching in Bradley County since 1999 and has been the biggest advocate for jiu-jitsu in Cleveland Tennessee during the last ten years.

David began training in spring of 2007. He became interested in martial arts after watching some MMA on TV. David started training Muay Thai and submission grappling shortly after that. He currently holds the rank of Assistant Instructor in Muay Thai and Blue Belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. David has competed and won multiple gi and no-gi competitions.

Breck Still began Shotokan Karate in 1993 at the age of 9 under Sensei Adrian Ellis. In 1998 he received the rank of Sho-dan (black belt). He had medaled and received multiple championships in National, Junior Olympic, Pan-Am, and World Championships.
In 1999, as a sophomore, he began wrestling for Bradley Central High School under coach Steve Logsdon. He went on to place 3rd in state as a junior and 2nd as a senior. In 2002, he was selected to represent team TN in the National Challenge Cub.
Breck Still began Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai in 2010 under instructor Tommy Wales in the Renato Tavares Association. He currently holds the rank of blue belt. Breck is a four time NAGA gold medalist as well as ProGear weight and open weight gold medalist. He is a two time state champion with a current record of 24-4 in gi competition.

Ethan was a high school wrestler that became a fan of mma in the summer of 2009 after watching the UFC. He began trying to find a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu program to get into, which led Ethan to start training with two Purple belts in Athen, Tn. Ethan began training under Tommy Wales in the fall of 2010 and currently holds the rank of Blue belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Ethan has competed and won multiple gi and no gi competitions.

Renato Tavares


Renato Tavares was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 1968. He started training in BJJ at the age of 6 with Geni Rebello now 80 years old. Geni Rebello is one of the best masters in Brazil and he is a black belt from Carlos and Helio Gracie. Geni Rebello has trained many students that are State, Pan-American and World Champions around the world.

Renato Tavares is a world renowned authority in the area of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) and Grappling Enhancement and is one of the best coaches in grappling activity.
